I have searched many resources and have not been able to find a direct answer.
Do append only files (AOF) need to be enabled for cluster to work properly?

No, AOF is for persistence, it technically has nothing to do with the Redis cluster. They are two different topics:
But if you don't enable AOF, there are chances that you lost your data when your master nodes die with its slaves.
