As you notice I open an issue related this AtnNn/haskell-rethinkdb#73.
And from the looks of your Thanos, it seems that there is already some build on rethinkDB version 2.4. Could you let me know whether you are willing to help rebirthdb to use your nix build? I have already fork this build, but I believe you still actively maintain this build server.
