What is Adobe Premiere Patch?

Adobe Premiere Patch is a feature that lets you source patch clips from the Source Monitor to the Program Monitor. Source patching means that you can select which tracks in the source clip will be inserted into which tracks in the sequence. For example, you can choose to insert only the video track of a clip, or only the audio track, or both.

Source patching also lets you target specific tracks in the sequence where you want to insert the clip. For example, you can choose to insert a clip into track V2 instead of track V1, or into track A3 instead of track A1.

How to Use Adobe Premiere Patch?

To use Adobe Premiere Patch, follow these steps:

  1. Open your project in Premiere Pro and load the clip you want to insert into the Source Monitor. You can do this by double-clicking on the clip in the Project panel, or by dragging it from the Project panel to the Source Monitor.
  2. Select the Mark In and Mark Out points in the Source Monitor to select the portion of the clip you want to insert. You can also use the I and O keyboard shortcuts.
  3. To insert the clip, do one of the following:
    • Drag the clip from the Source Monitor to the Program Monitor and select Insert in the Program Monitor.
    • Drag the clip from the Source Monitor to a specific point in the Timeline panel and release it.
    • Use the Insert button (,) or keyboard shortcut (,) in the Source Monitor.
  4. The clip will be inserted into your sequence at the current playhead position, or at the point where you dropped it in the Timeline panel. The existing clips in your sequence will be moved forward to make room for the new clip.
  5. To customize how your clip is inserted, use the source patching and track targeting buttons in the Timeline panel. These buttons are located on the left side of each track header. The source patching buttons are blue for video tracks and green for audio tracks. The track targeting buttons are gray with a white outline.
  6. To enable or disable source patching for a track, click on its source patching button. A highlighted button means that the track is enabled for source patching. A dimmed button means that it is disabled. For example, if you want to insert only the video track of a clip, disable source patching for its audio track by clicking on its green button.
  7. To change which track in your sequence will receive the source patching, click on its track targeting button. A highlighted button means that the track is targeted for source patching. A dimmed button means that it is not targeted. For example, if you want to insert a clip into track V2 instead of track V1, disable track targeting for V1 by clicking on its gray button, and enable track targeting for V2 by clicking on its gray button.
  8. You can also use keyboard shortcuts to toggle source patching and track targeting for each track. To toggle source patching for video tracks, use Shift+1 through Shift+9. To toggle source patching for audio tracks, use Option+Shift+1 through Option+Shift+9 (macOS) or Alt+Shift+1 through Alt+Shift+9 (Windows). To toggle track targeting for video tracks, use 1 through 9. To toggle track targeting for audio tracks, use Option+1 through Option+9 (macOS) or Alt+1 through Alt+9 (Windows).
