And maybe other prominent packages, if their output differs drastically theme-wise.

Good suggestion. It's something I have wanted to do, but haven't made time for it yet.

I'm only a very casual user of org-mode, so can you point me to any example documents or specific elements to look for where output differs based on themes? Maybe something I can use in the preview text.

@robmerrell http://pawelbx.github.io/emacs-theme-gallery/ has support of it, actually, so maybe reuse or at least copy-paste? :)

@a13ph looking at that implementation it actually takes screenshots (and relies on three external utilities for taking the screenshot resizing and whatnot). It's a really nice approach if you ask me, as you'd see what is actually generated in any mode or while in the middle of an interactive helm-like command.

The code from @robmerrell uses htmlize.el to turn a buffer into html, I was trying to htmlize the content of the modeline without much success. see here
