According to the wiki,

Reading a noncursed scroll of confuse monster causes your hands to glow red, and will also prompt you to name the scroll.

There was no prompt to name the scroll.

This seems to work for me. Can you reproduce it? If so and hopefully the backup file now work, you could attach an exported save file here.
