Currently users have to dive into the source code (as directed here: http://docs.saltstack.com/en/latest/topics/targeting/grains.html#examples-of-grains) to see the grains that are available by default. A new page should be created that includes the following items:

  • All grains
  • An example of calling the grain on the command line
  • An example of referencing the grain in a state for comparisons
  • An example of referencing a grain in a managed file to set values based on the grain (as well as mathematics logic).

I think this would be really helpful to new users, as well as experienced users who are diving into grains and how they can manipulate things.

Some grains are only available on certain platforms, if I remember correctly. For instance, I believe osarch is only Linux. Something to keep in mind for whoever decides to tackle this.
