Noted that WordPress blogs can now peer with Mastodon and other ActivityPub nodes.

Suppose I have a WordPress site and my username is scripting.

What address would you follow in Mastodon?

My first guess is @scripting@scripting.wordpress.com -- but I'm confused enough about Mastodon to not know where I need to type that address to be able to (try to) follow it.

Your first guess would be correct assuming your username in Wordpress is scripting. In the Mastodon webclient just enter that in the search area at the top left and it should show up if ActivityPub is enabled. For example to follow my self-hosted Wordpress blog search for @elmer@www.symphora.com in the search box of your Mastodon client.

I installed the plugin on my own site when you posted the question, and as @emasters said it works quickly and the install was basic and fast. It seems like if you have "the Business plan ($40.00/Monthly)" you can install it on Wordpress.com accounts.

Is anyone able to follow @scripting@scripting.wordpress.com?

If so -- how did you do it?

When I search for @scripting@scripting.wordpress.com from Mastodon I get a nothing found message.
If I try to add you as a friend on my WP instance it tells me it can't find the ActivityPub name.

@emasters -- thanks for doing the experiment. 😄

Did you enable the plugin after installing?

edit: Is your user name scripting when you look at https://wordpress.com/people/team/scripting.wordpress.com?
-- yes looks like it since this URL loads Dave's posts: https://scripting.wordpress.com/author/scripting/

It's worth noting that the ActivityPub functionality is only available on sites where the ActivityPub plugin is installed.

That plugin is not installed on your WordPress.com site, scripting.wordpress.com.

At this point you have 3 options:

  1. Wait. The ActivityPub plugin will very soon be automatically installed on all WordPress.com sites, including yours! It's still being tested on the platform at the moment.
  2. Purchase a Business plan for that WordPress.com site of yours. It will give you the option to install the plugin.
  3. Move your site to a different hosting provider where you will have the option to install plugins.

What address would you follow in Mastodon?

Once the plugin is installed and configured on a site, your readers will have multiple options:

  • They can follow @<author>@yoursite.com, where <author> is a WordPress username. This way each author on a site has their own feed.
  • They can follow @<word>@yoursite.com, where <word> is a string you set in the plugin settings. It could be @feed, @blog, @updates, @me, ... You pick! That feed will send updates for each post on the site, regardless of the author.

Hopefully this clarifies things a bit!
