indubi<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="3"/>tabiliter constet, peccata primum Deo, deinde sacerdoti esse confitenda :
<lb ed="#Be" n="4"/>et siipse defuerit, etiam socio : illud Joannis Chrysostomi superius
posi<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="5"/>tum non est ita intelligendum, ul liceat alicui, si tempus habeat, sacerdoti
<lb ed="#Be" n="6"/>non confiteri: sed quia sufficit ubi crimen occultum est, soli Deo per
sa<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="7"/>cerdotem dicere, et semel. Nec oportet publicari coram multis, quod
occul<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="8"/>tum est. Quod notavit dicens : Non tibi dico ut te prodas in publicum.
Sic<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="9"/>ut enim publica noxa publico eget remedio, ita et occulta, secreta
confes<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="10"/>sione et occulta satisfactione purgatur. Nec necesse est ut quod sacerdoti
<lb ed="#Be" n="11"/>semel confessi sumus *, iterum confiteamur : sed lingua cordis, non carnis,
<lb ed="#Be" n="12"/>apud verum judicem id jugiter confiteri debemus. Unde item Joannes ait *:
<lb ed="#Be" n="13"/>Nunc autem si recorderis peccatorum tuorum, et frequenter ea in
conspe<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="14"/>ctu Dei pronunties, et pro eis depreceris, citius illa delebis. Si vero
obli<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="15"/>viscaris, tunc eorum recordaberis nolens, quando publicabuntur, et in
<lb ed="#Be" n="16"/>conspectu omnium amicorum et'inimicorum, sanctorumque Angelorum
<lb ed="#Be" n="17"/>proferentur. Ita etiam illud Ambrosii : Lacryme lavant delictum, quod
<lb ed="#Be" n="18"/>voce pudor est confiteri :-ad publicam poenitentiam referendum est. Ibi
<lb ed="#Be" n="19"/>enim virtutem lacrymarum et confessionis ostendens, significare voluit,
<lb ed="#Be" n="20"/>quod lacryme occulte et confessio secreta, sicut quae fit soli sacerdoti, lavant
<lb ed="#Be" n="21"/>delictum quod pudet aliquem publice confiteri. Quia vero dicit se lacrymas
<lb ed="#Be" n="22"/>Petri legisse, non satisfactionem vel confessionem: per hoc non excluditilla.
<lb ed="#Be" n="23"/>Multa enim facta sunt, quae scripta non sunt : et forte nondum facta erat
<lb ed="#Be" n="24"/>institutio confessionis, quae modo est. Similiter et illud Prosperi : Si sui
<lb ed="#Be" n="25"/>judices fiant, mutabunt aeterna supplicia. Et illud : Facilius Deum
placa<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="26"/>bunt sibi, qui aut propriis confessionibus crimen produnt, aut nescientibus

confessio<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="2"/>nem et satisfactionem referri oportet. Non enim solis sacerdotibus jus
hi<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="3"/>gandi atque solvendi datum est, si cuique suo arbitrio se poena vel
excom<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="4"/>municationis sententia ligare, et absque sacerdotali judicio seipsum Deo
<lb ed="#Be" n="5"/>ve] altari reconciliare licet : quod ecclesiasticee institutioni et consuetudini
<lb ed="#Be" n="6"/>penitus repugnat. Potius ergo si publice peccasti, publice confitere te
<lb ed="#Be" n="7"/>reum, et emenda. Si vero occulte deliquisti, etiam sic non taceas : nec
ta<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="8"/>men dico, ut publices. Taciturnitas enim peccati ex superbia nascitur
cor<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="9"/>dis *. Ideo enim peccatum suum quis celat, ne reputetur foris, qualem se
<lb ed="#Be" n="10"/>jam divino conspectui exhibuit : quod ex fonte superbie nascitur. Species
<lb ed="#Be" n="11"/>enim superbie est, se velle justum videri qui peccator est : alque
hypo<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="12"/>crita convincitur, quiinstar primorum parentum, vel tergiversatione
ver<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="13"/>borum peccata sua levigare contendit, vel sicut Cain peccata sua reticendo
<lb ed="#Be" n="14"/>supprimere querit +. Ubi ergo superbia regnat et hypocrisis, humilitas
<lb ed="#Be" n="15"/>locum non habet. Sine humilitate vero alicui veniam sperare non licet.
<lb ed="#Be" n="16"/>Ubi est ergo taciturnitas confessionis, non est speranda venia criminis.
<lb ed="#Be" n="17"/>Jam certissime liquet, quam sit detestabile peccati silentium, et e converso
<lb ed="#Be" n="18"/>quam sit necessaria confesssio. Est enim confessio testimonium
conscien<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="19"/>tiae Deum timentis. Qui enim timet judicium Dei, peccatum non erubescit
<lb ed="#Be" n="20"/>confiteri. Perfectus timor solvit omnem pudorem : confessio peccati
pudo<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="21"/>rem habet, et ipsa erubescentia est gravis poena. Ideoque jubemur
confi<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="22"/>teri peccata, ut erubescentiam patiamur pro poena : nam hoc ipsum pars
<lb ed="#Be" n="23"/>est divini judicii.

<lb ed="#Be" n="25"/>deletum sit peccatum? Dicimus quia quaedam punitio peccati est, sicut
<lb ed="#Be" n="26"/>satisfactio operis. Per confessionem etiam intelligit sacerdos, qualiter
de<lb break="no" ed="#Be" n="27"/>beat judicare de crimine. Per eam quoque peccator fit humilior et cautior.
