Firefox opens a web page for editing items instead of Desktop app.

Is this normal behaviour? Need to find another computer to try this out on. It seems like it should open the Desktop app.

If this is not correct behaviour, it's probably because Firefox is a Flatpak and can't communicate with 1Password. Possibly.

This is not correct behaviour.

According to myself, this worked briefly..

We use the Native Messaging Host to handle the communication between 1Password and the Browser extension. Unfortunately, containerized Flatpak and Snap do not support the Native Messaging Host. If either 1Password or your browser is installed within one of those containers, it's not going to be possible to set up a connection between the two. There is a proposed MR for adding this support. It's moving slowly, but I do still see movement on that MR.

Once it goes through, we will be able to re-evaluate how we set up the connection. Until then, your best option is going to be to install Firefox natively. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with a steam deck, so I do not know whether that is an option.
