Heya DrBangalter,
There is a known problem with the starter avatars with certain graphics cards with certain graphics settings - please see BUG-5156 for details.
Because you have Intel graphics and not AMD graphics, Im fairly certain that this bug will be fixed for you if you update to Mac Mavericks - which will also update your graphics drivers.
You are using Mac 10.6.8, which is not actually supported anymore for Second life - please see http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Tools-and-Technology/Updates-to-the-Second-Life-System-Requirements/ba-p/2643650
I strongly advise that you update to Mavericks or you will also suffer from very poor performace and some Mac 10.6.8 specific rendering glitches on Second Life.
If you do not wish to update your operating system then please go to Me -> Preferences -> Graphics -> Advanced and untick "Hardware Skinning". This should fix the broken looking avatars.
If unticking hardware skinning does not help, then in the same place in preferences, untick "Atmospheric Shaders".
You can also change your avatar so that you are not wearing one affected by this bug.
Go to Me -> Choose an avatar -> Classics and click "select" on the avatar of your choice.
All the avatars under the classics tab should display correctly for you.
