Group conversations broken after restoring phone #8890
Comments
@PierreMarchand20 Hey there! I work on Signal Desktop - if you could provide a debug log from your desktop instance, that would help us understand what's going on. |
Here's the log from the computer where I deleted all the data, I linked it with phone, then all the conversations came back and it asked for linking again with my phone:
|
And here's the one of my phone: |
actually, I tried to send a message to a group using signal desktop on the computer where I did not delete all the datas, and where I still receive message from this group, and they did not receive it. |
it is really messy, without doing anything, now I receive messages from group conversations on my phone (the group is called "New group"), but I do not receive messages on my computer anymore (here the group is called "Unknown group"). |
For one of my group conversation, I have been added to the group (even if I am part of it, and I receive messages from this group) and it seems to have make things normal (I can send messages and see all the infos). |
I experience the same issue on Signal 4.55.8. I just changed the phone, kept the phone number. All the individual contacts work as expected (that is, I can have a conversation with them; all local signal data/conversations stored on the old phone) are lost. However, groups do not work as described in this issue already: |
I tested it on another group: indeed, simply adding somebody to the group (updating the group), "repairs" the access on the new device. |
Bug description
I have seen a few similar issues, but all closed: #5636, #1048, #1029.
I have one phone and two MacBook Pro, all with signal installed and linked with my phone. For some reasons, I had to restore (with icloud) my phone (but same phone number).
Signal Desktop on my computers still had all my conversations, but my phone was not linked anymore to them. I had to delete all the data from one computer to link it to my phone. And the day after, it lost the link (but retrieve my conversations) and it asked to link again my phone.
I had a group conversation, and I cannot send/receive messages on it with my phone. But I still can on the computer where I did not delete all the data.
Steps to reproduce
Actual result: I have to delete data from signal desktop to be able to link again, and I cannot send/receive messages from my group conversations with my restored phone.
Expected result: I would expect to be able to link my phone to my computer without having to delete all the data on the computer. And I would also expect to retrieve all my conversations on my phone, from my computer.
