MAC Unhandled Error SyntaxError: Unexpected end of JSON input at JSON.parse #4373

  • I have searched open and closed issues for duplicates

Bug Description

I have had signal installed on previous mac's however this is the first time installing on this mac.

I installed signal from here by clicking "download for mac"

I followed the instructions to place Signal into applications folder, then attempted launching. this is the error i see

I do not have a ~/.config/Signal folder
I do not have a Applications/Signal.app/Contents/Resources/app.asar/app folder

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Install fresh mac install on a computer that may or may not have memory of old signal application
  2. Attempt to start signal

Actual Result:

Unable to run signal, or access any part of the application.

Expected Result:

Run and use Signal.

You're on a mac, so the data directory is ~/Library/Application Support/Signal. You could help us out by looking at the config.json file in that directory, to see why/how it's malformed.

~/Library/Application\ Support/Signal/config.json appears to be empty, although it does exist

You should be able to start up if you delete that file. How do you think an empty config.json file got there? Did you copy your Application Support directory over from your other mac?

No idea how it got there, i restored this mac from a backup of my old one (without apps).

Seems to be starting up now, thanks @scottnonnenberg-signal !!
