Bug Description

I primarily chat on Signal with one person. I almost always have the text entry caret and focus in that user's text input area. When I am in another app and receive a message from that person, clicking the notification removes the caret from that user's text input area. I have to move my cursor to click the message input box so I can send a reply.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Put the caret in the text input box for a particular user.
  2. Click away to another app.
  3. Get a notification for a message from that user.
  4. Click the notification.

Actual Result:

The caret has been removed from the text entry box.

Expected Result:

The caret should remain in the same text entry box it was before the notification was clicked.

It also loses focus when just clicking on the chat.

It also loses focus when a link or image in the chat is clicked. This is the most annoying thing in the whole app for me. It would be really great if it could be fixed.

Just a reminder for everyone in this thread - the keyboard shortcut cmd/ctrl+shift+t will set the caret in the composition area. It's often faster than clicking.

Thanks for the reminder. The desired outcome here is to not have to click or perform any shortcut at all, and for the app to keep focus where it was.

This is actually useful, thank you. However, not having to click or press buttons at all would be by far the more preferable solution.
I feel like this should be a relatively easy fix that would increase usability a lot.

Yeah this is a big missing UX feature in Signal desktop (all other desktop messengers have this - not using an obscure hotkey, but just typing).

There's been a PR that addresses this open for 2 years, but it never received a full, helpful review and it's been ignored for the last months:

@scottnonnenberg-signal would it be possible to get this re-prioritized and finally accepted into a stable version? I'm willing to put some work in to do this.
