title: "About Me"
image: "/images/simon.jpg"
content: |-
I'm a veteran software engineer writing their first lines of code as an 1980s kid on a C64 and have worked on many
platforms, using different 3GL programming languages over time. A humble sysadmin in the 1990s,
then a Java engineer during the first dot com boom, working on web applications for Dresdner Bank
in Germany and later for Telstra, Allianz, News Corp, ABC and the ATO in Australia.
During the 2010's I started working on mobile apps, which took me to several fast growing startups in Southeast Asia.
Building a system from the ground up that rapidly scaled to millions of users taught me some (painful) lessons
about micro-services, end-user sessions, HTTP and networks and lead to the creation of [my current pet project](https://www.j8a.io).
After several years of travel, I'm now back in Australia and in a management role, but always find myself
returning to my software engineering roots. As of 2020, I'm mainly programming in Golang and You'll find me
happily devouring my slice of pizza at the [local user group](https://www.meetup.com/en-AU/golang-syd/).
