Gron has a similar purpose : flatten json to enable text processing tools to handle json.
I used it to keep AWK in my pipeline.
It is written in go but not very fast.
Of course there is "ungron" to perform the unflattening.
It seems they use a slightly different encoding, using brakets for array indices
