Tying equipment to equipment

We manage a large bit of computer hardware which can be contained within other items. For example, it would be great to have a tree structure ... something like this:

• Asset physical location
  • Rack
    • Chassis
      • Card 1
        • Sub-part 1
      • Card 2
      • Card 3

This way you can track exactly where a specific item might be located. We tried tackling this in excel with a "contained in" column that referenced a serial number, but it became ugly.
