astropy/astropy#968 This included a fix for an obscure issue on Hurd-based systems and possibly others that don't fully support mmap.flush(). Might as well backport it so that we're in sync.

astropy/astropy#996 Fixed an issue with updating table column properties via the ColDefs object. Unfortunately this fix is incompatible with some difference changes that have occurred in PyFITS trunk; this will need a closer look then.

(Possibly backport to 3.1.x and 3.0.x)

Deciding not to backport 996 to 3.1.x or 3.0.x since it does actually introduce an API difference.
