Overview

This mod adds Ruad, a new smith in Waukeen's Promenade, who improves items as well as forges some quite new ones.

Original note from the author

I never thought I would actually succeed in making my own items, let alone my own item upgrade mod to implement them. But I've managed to do it, although it did take some time, a lot of hard work, and help from a very experienced person (Weimer) to get me there.
Hope you guys (and girls) enjoy it.



Compatibility

This mod is designed to work on the following Infinity Engine games: the original Baldur's Gate II (BG2, or just SoA) with or without the Throne of Bhaal (ToB) expansion, Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition (BG2:EE), the conversion projects Baldur's Gate Trilogy (BGT) and Enhanced Edition Trilogy (EET).

This is a WeiDU mod, and therefore should be compatible with all WeiDU mods. If you encounter any bugs, please report them on the forum!

Although it is not required for Ruad to function properly, classical game players are strongly recommended to download and install the latest version of the BG2 Fixpack before proceeding with the installation of this mod.


Installation

Notes

If you've previously installed the mod, remove it before extracting the new version. To do this, run setup-ruad.exe, un-install all previously installed main component and delete the 📁 ruad folder.

When installing or un-installing, do not close the DOS window by clicking on the X button! Instead, press the Enter key whenever instructed to do so.

Disable any antivirus or other memory-resident software before installing this or any other mod. Some (particularly avast and Norton!) have a tendency to report false positives with mod activity, resulting in failed installs.

Enhanced Editions Note

The Enhanced Editions are actively supported games. Please note that every patch update will wipe your current mod setup! If in the middle of a modded game you might want to delay the patch update (if possible) as even after reinstalling the mods, you might not be able to continue with your old savegames. Alternatively, copy the whole game's folder into a new one that can be modded and will stay untouched by game patches. It is important that you install the mod to the language version you are playing the game in. Otherwise, the dialogues of the mod will not show but give error messages.

Windows

Ruad for Windows is distributed as an extractable compressed archive and includes a WeiDU installer.

Extract the contents of the mod archive into the folder of the game you wish to modify (the folder which contains the "CHITIN.KEY" file), using 7zip, WinRAR, or another file compression utility that handles .zip files. On successful extraction, there should be a 📁 ruad folder and a setup-ruad.exe file in your game folder. To install, simply double-click setup-ruad.exe and follow the instructions on screen.

Run setup-ruad.exe in your game folder to reinstall, un-install or otherwise change the components settings.

Mac OS X

Ruad for Mac OS X is distributed is distributed in the same compressed archive and includes a WeiDU installer.

First, extract the files from the archive into your game directory. On successful extraction, there should be a 📁 ruad folder, setup-ruad and setup-ruad.command files in your game folder. To install, simply double-click setup-ruad.command and follow the instructions on screen.

Run setup-ruad.command in your game folder to reinstall, un-install or otherwise change the components settings.

Linux

Ruad for Linux is distributed in the same compressed archive and does not include a WeiDU installer.

Extract the contents of the mod to the folder of the game you wish to modify.

Download the latest version of WeiDU for Linux from WeiDU.org and copy weidu and weinstall to /usr/bin. Following that, open a terminal, cd to your game installation directory, run tolower and answer 'Y' to both queries. You can avoid running the second option (linux.ini) if you've already ran it once in the same directory. To save time, the archive is already tolowered, so there's no need to run the first option (lowercasing file names) either if you've extracted only this mod since the last time you lowercased file names. If you're unsure, running tolower and choosing both options is the safe bet.

To install, run weinstall setup-ruad in your game folder. Then run wine bgmain.exe (or wine baldur.exe for EE games) and start playing.

Note for Complete Un-installation

In addition to the methods above for removing individual components, you can completely un-install the mod using setup-ruad --uninstall at the command line to remove all components without wading through prompts.


Components

The installer includes the following components. The number of each is the component DESIGNATED number which gives it a fixed install position and allows automated installers to specify component choices.

0. Ruad Ro'fhessa (SoA)

Ruad is a brand new blacksmith who forges item upgrades, as well as a few brand new ones. I won't spoil his location for you, but I will tell that he is near the Adventurer Mart.

10. Ruad Ro'fhessa (ToB) (requires Ruad for SoA)

This component makes Ruad ToB compatible, and puts him in your Pocket Plane.

  • Converted inventory BAMs to EE: This feature attempts to modify traditional inventory BAMs so that both the large and small icons are utilized by the EE games. Inventory icon BAMs in the bam folder that meet these requirements are patched and saved back to the override folder.
  • Inventory item icons: fixed wrong transparency index (pure green [0.255.0] replaces old turquoise - a pretty annoying BAMWorkshop leftover 😲).
  • dialog and script files: added Chapters compatibility with EET (variables %bg2_chapter_n% are evaluated to set continuity chapter numbers).

    • EE games: added Shaman usability flag (replaced BIT30 flag with an op#319 equipped effect).
  • The Ugly Stick (u#staf01.itm):
    • Fixed wrong damage: 1d6 + bonuses as per description (was 2d6 + bonuses, a little too much for a staff!).
    • Burning Hands and Agannazar's Scorcher abilities: added Break Sanctuary flag for EE games.
    • Appended tooltip.2da: Melee, Thrown, Burning Hands, Agannazar's Scorcher.
  • Adamantine Plate (u#plat01.itm):
    • Fixed name and item description: it is actually a +4 Full Plate (not +5), many kits restrictions were missing.
    • Fixed wrong AC bonus vs. slashing weapons: 4 (was 3).
  • Cloak of the Elemental Star (u#clck01.itm):
    • Fixed item description: added weight (3) and Wizard Slayer restriction.
    • Hard-coded item inventory and header icons and op255 resource file to avoid writing them in installation process.
    • Elemental Star Dart (u#clk01a.itm): hard-coded item inventory and header icons. Fixed wrong Speed Factor: 0 (was 2). Fixed item description: added kit restrictions.
  • Cloak of the Shadow (u#clck02.itm):
    • Fixed item description: added missing weight (3).
  • Pikim's Armor (u#leat01.itm):
    • Fixed wrong inventory and description icons: Shadow Armor (LEAT08) seems more accurate than Armor of Missile Attraction (LEAT06). 😉
    • Added 1PP compatibility to harmonize colors item with EE games and classical 1PP modded games.
  • Neb's Nasty Cutter (u#dagg01.itm):
    • Fixed opcode #142 (Display portrait icon): replaced wrong 137 icon (Bleeding) with 6 (Poisoned).
    • Added a brand new bam file for the summoning ability (no longer uses the dagger inventory icon).
    • Rewrote Summoning ability: replaced op#67 (was calling CHWRAITH.CRE instead of u#dagg01.cre) with a new effect (u#dagg01). Fixed wrong duration (50 - was 600) and added op#174 effect (Play sound).
    • EE compatibility: added immunity for opponents immune to poison (op#324).
    • Appended tooltip.2da with a new strref (Summon a Restless Child Spirit).
    • Restless Child Spirit (u#dagg01.cre): added scripting name (u#dagg01) and override u#dagg01 script (block of chwraith.bcs when Restless Child Spirit dies) and replaced override script WTARSGHT with WTASIGHT (no ranged weapon).
  • Enchanted Bow of Arvoreen (u#bow01.itm):
    • Replaced ARROW projectile with iarow11 (golden) for EE game or if 1PP is installed.
  • Dragon's Tooth (u#halb01.itm):
    • Fixed item description: added missing kit restrictions.
    • Replaced wrong damage vs. dragons effect (DRAGDAM3 in equipped effects) with a more accurate BG2 Fixpack-like one (u#halb01) in melee header.
    • Replaced item colors 33 CHROME MAGENTA with 46 RED, more accurate with the new inventory icon, and with 195 CHROME RED for EE games and classical 1PP modded games.
  • Cloak of Thay (u#clck03.itm):
    • Immunity to Normal Weapons equipped effect: added DS values (op#282 181 DETECTILLUSIONSMTPBONUS aka PROTECTION_FROM_NORMAL_WEAPONS) for classical games and Set State PROTECTION_FROM_NORMAL_WEAPONS (111) and BUFF_PRO_WEAPONS (64) for EE games.
