I started this project for two reasons. The first was that I was really disappointed when Dark Sky announced that they were shutting down their weather API, so I wanted to find a way to keep some of the amazing projects that depend on the running.

The second goal is little broader. The underlying forecast data that NOAA/ ECMRWF produces is free, but it's distributed in formats that are tricky to use, especially in web applications. I wanted to see if I could develop a tool that makes them more accessible, as well as something that makes the underlying model physics more transparent. Weather data is a vital tool, so I think there's a lot of value is sharing a weather website and API that explains exactly what is happening from the weather models to the user! That's why I'm documenting this in as much detail as I can on the project blog.

While the underlying forecast data is free from NOAA, processing and sharing it via AWS is definitely not! This means that keeping this project running depends on community support, and so thank you for helping to make this possible!
