One can use MapViewOfFile on Windows in lieu of mmap -- and the CRAN package mmap by Jeff Ryan does so (implementing mmap access to file from R). See the CRAN page or the GitHub copy of the repo.

We could probably borrow the functionality to deal with int32_t relatively easily. Obviously not urgent.

Had not seen #32 -- I wrote #33 on the train in and committed but noticed that my previous one was #31 so I wondered :)
