XStream provides many methods to control the serialization of objects, e.g. the various alias() methods. If using XStreamMarshaller, then these methods cannot be invoked.
I suggest that XStreamMarshaller be modified to have a protected initXStream() method which subclasses can override, which is called during post-construct.
