Despite having the Show tray icon option enabled, no tray icon show up on Ubuntu 2014.04 (default Unity environment).

Yes that is a "feature" of unity (see this bug), they want to force apps to use their application indicator system instead. The problem is that the new system doesn't (and won't) support the most important feature of gmb's systray : popping up a window when the mouse is over it.

The work-around is to install a modified version of unity : https://launchpad.net/~gurqn/+archive/systray-trusty (found in this forum thread)

Another work would be to to use the desktop widget plugin in gmb to create an icon that behaves the same and put it somewhere on the screen. (a bit like the existing "invisible hotspot" desktop widget layout that pops up a window when the mouse is over it)

There is of course the work-around of using some other than unity (I'm using MATE)

As you might have guess, I'm not happy about this, the traytip window is one of my favorite feature. But of course checking "show tray icon" and not seeing anything is not very nice and could be improved. I plan to let the user choose between the different types of indicators (gnome 3 has its own IIRC)

How about a dumber tray icon with just "play/pause", a bit like Amarok's one as seen below?
Ubuntu is quite popular, so this would help a significant proportion of users.

Hello Quentin, do you have news about this bug? I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 and the Gmusicbrowser systray icon miss me.

Regards.

LGDN.

In version 1.1.13, I've added an app-indicator plugin that works with some desktops. I think that's the solution that nicolas-raoul proposed, sorry I forgot about commenting on this bug about it.
So you can try that plugin and see if it works for you.

I have yet to redesign the various icon/indicator/notification/hot-spot options/plugins/hacks into a coherent set of options which will fix this "show tray icon" doesn't work bug.
