I know it's alpha, but I sense that a lot of the features rely on connecting to other people. Is "Peers around you" the only way to connect right now?

So far only through LAN or Pubs (through gossip that happened via LAN sync). Eventually this will be built properly and support syncing with peers on the Internet.
