We're missing icons for the following music genres:

  • None currently. Post comment if you find we're missing an icon for a genre.

Should we also add text descriptions for the genres like we do for videos in Global_GenreInfo?

Hey jingai, hopefully I did these right and they'll help you out. There's multiples in some genre's as well as some of the same spread out onto other genre's...so you can choose. If you see something which needs to be labeled differently, just let me know.

And there were a couple I couldn't come up with anything, but I honestly don't know why everything needs to have an icon (Cover?). :--)

Looking over them now, but the reason "Cover" is on that list is not what you're thinking I'm guessing -- it refers to Cover Bands. That is, bands that only play covers of others' songs and hence, their genre is "Cover".

Quick question: Did you intentionally change font halfway through on the Post Punk icon?

Oops, my bad, looks like I was too quick on the copy/paste...

Cool, thanks a ton for all of these! Merging them in now :)

Yeah, I knew what cover bands meant...my tongue-in-cheek was who listens to them versus the real thing? :--) I tried to come up with something and just kept hitting a blank wall. Got any examples I could google on to get some inspiration?

Ah, yeah, I don't personally... but a user did request it :) Hmm, I think it was @sialivi.. maybe he can chime in here with an idea for ya.

There is a small issue: the font size you used is apparently a few points smaller than the existing genre icons.

Ack...really? Crap, sorry about that. Can you look at this one and see if it's better?

It's still short and not the same distance from the bottom as the others. See this:

Okay, thx for sending me the pic (prob should have looked at one of those first!). I followed Amra's instructions but he didn't say how many pixels/in he was using, which was 100. The font size is a little off as well, but I wonder if that's because I'm on a Mac and he might be on a PC(?). Regardless, look at this sample and see if it's close enough. It seems a "little" thicker than his but the font I downloaded (per his link) only lets me set a medium style.

I think it's thicker because of the outline he used (which probably overlapped the edges by one pixel, rather than outlining it per se.. if that makes sense). Can you try that and see if it matches better?

Also, I can't tell because the background of your sample icon is black, but he added a drop-shadow too.

Yup, I had tried that in Fireworks with no luck, but I just jumped over to Photoshop, and it seems to handle the stroke better (I use FW for web stuff and PS for print). Give me a little bit and I'm gonna redo all those icons.

Thanks a bunch for all your help here. Really sorry I'm being so nit-picky !

No worries man. My apologies for messing these up. I did them in a hurry and late last night. I hope these are better! If not, just give a shout and I'll keep tweaking!

Not sure if anyone would even notice this, but... the drop shadow's light source is backwards on those -- it's coming from the top-left on the others, while it appears to be top-right on yours. I'd say only worry about this if you've still got the original photoshop files.

Also, the font seems ever so slightly different.. have a look at the "N" character for instance. On yours it extends to the bottom, but on Amra's the left 'leg' is shorter. No clue why that is, but it's no big deal.

tuckbodi commented Oct 4, 2012

Crap, PS defaults to 30 degrees and I need to flip it. Good catch! I still have those so give me a little bit and I can redo them.

I also notice on the longer two-name, he stacked them (i.e. Female Vocalists & Progressive Rock) and I can redo those, but unfortunately, I had to size down Instrumental.

The "N" in Alternative Rock...I honestly don't know what's going on. Looking at Animation, it looks the same on Git as what I produced..yet Alternative Rock doesn't.

What's a little frustrating is it seems some use a center stroke and some use an outside stroke. And, it appears he may be doing an emboss on some. Let me send Amra a PM and see if he can share with me what his Text Layer settings are.

BTW, keep the critique coming! Metropolis is a very, very great piece of work by you guys, and the graphics need to equal that (Amra truly came up with some awesome stuff!). I apologize getting a little sloppy but I was in a hurry on these, and I got a little careless. Got some time today and tomorrow to make these right!!

Yeah, I have a feeling we're just noticing some small variations in the original icons now because we're looking at them closely. I agree with you about the emboss, too.. I thought it looked a little different but couldn't put my finger on what it was. It almost looked like heavier anti-aliasing.

Hey jingai, sorry for the delay, real life interrupted. :--) Here's the redone icons, which I tried to match up to what Amra had done. I hadn't heard back from him so I took a stab at both, which had slight differences, as well as among themselves. Hopefully they're a good compromise.

I now have PS Actions setup for both, as well as the settings documented, which we can put up here somewhere if others want to take a stab at them.

Lastly, I redid the Holiday icon as the one before was for Holiday music (not sure how I got that in my head).

Let me know if these are okay.

Much better! The more I look closely at the existing ones, the more differences I see (among the old ones, not yours). So I think this is as close as we can get without redoing them all :P

I did notice that the Musical movie genre icon has the wrong offset on the label. This isn't one that you did, but since you've got the PS Action set up and all, would you mind correcting it for me?

As for documenting this, that's VERY much appreciated. You could either post it in the forums to my "Call for artists" thread, or send me the instructions and I can add it to the OP on that thread. Your call.

Didn't know if you meant Music or Movies, so I did both.

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2276104/MusicalMovies.zip
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2276104/MusicalMusic.zip

I actually think you should add it to the OP as it may get lost in translation. Would a PDF be okay (can we link to it here on Git?)? I have one for Movies and one for Music (since they were slightly different).

And what about putting them in the media/moviegenres & media/musicgenres directories here on Git? Maybe with a "_" at the beginning of the name to force it to the top, or it's own directory called say Icon Directions (to get above the NoLabel dir)?

tuckbodi commented Oct 6, 2012

Oops, I see in your post you say movies. You got both anyways. :--)

PDF would be fine for me. I can reformat it for the post (or just link to it), and include the PDF in the git repository.

I don't think you can inline a PDF here on github, but you can certainly just throw it up on your dropbox account and I can get it from there.

Two folders, one each for movies & music, with how-to instructions & settings and an example PSD (Photoshop) file.

Maybe throw each folder in each of their respective media folders, and then link to it from the OP?

Thanks again! One minor issue, "Dark Cabaret" and "Punk Cabaret" are two different genres. Similarly with "Chiptune" and "SID". They can share the same image no problem, it's just the text labels.
