The current Sarama 1.33.0 is affected by this issue IBM/sarama#2233 which makes the canary unusable when the re-auth is enabled.
The bug was fixed via IBM/sarama#2234 and it's now available in the latest 1.34.0 release.
We have to update to this version and cherry-pick to the 0.3.0 release branch, because the bug was found during the RC1 testing by @k-wall .
