2.x API Migration

The 2.x API has a large number of changes from the 0.x versions of the library. This document describes the changes necessary to move from an app using 0.x versions to the 2.x API. Note that the 2.x API is designed to be configurable to work with a wide variety of beacons. Out of the box, it will work beacons meeting the open AltBeacon standard which have no restrictions on the use with Android. If you wish to configure the library to work with other types of custom or proprietary beacons, see the new BeaconParser class.

All API classes have been moved to a new package structure:

Beacon field and method changes

Beacons and regions now support an arbitrary number of identifier parts of varying lengths. This allows the library to work with multiple beacon types that specify different types of identifiers. Convenience methods exist for setting up and accessing a three-part identifier as in the 0.x API, which is fully compatible with the AltBeacon standard.

  • Instead of using the proximity field, simply use range calculations based on distance.

Beacon/Region identifier changes

The Identifier class now encapsulates each part of a multi-part beacon or region identifier. This allows the library to work with multiple types of beacons.

Background Mode

The methods to set the background mode have been simplified, because the formerly "pro" library features have now been moved into the open source library. You can still use a method like below to directly set the background mode, but it is now global instead of specific to a BeaconConsumer. See the Pro Features section below for details on the preferred method of managing background mode.

Pro Features

Features that were formerly part of the "pro" library are now included in the open source library. These include the ability to automatically set the background mode and the ability to launch your app automatically at phone startup, and the ability to restart it after being killed by the task switcher.
