In the Open Intro course, no stem-and-leaf-plot is displayed for me (around 57% of first lecture (if there are more than one)).

I'm using R 3.1.0 x64 in RStudio 0.98.507 under Win 8.1 and installed the Open Intro package yesterday.

Also, a thorough description about the different courses would be nice. I'm doing the Open Intro course simply, because I had no clue what to expect and Intro seems to be a good starting point. As it turns out, this seems to be a very basic statistics course, which I don't need, having done this (not in R) already for dozens of times. I will still continue, since I don't even know, if any lectures will follow onto this first one.

Okay, I finished the lesson now and noticed in the end (when all plots were presented again) that it was, at least partly, my mistake. I've confess, that I never saw a stem-and-leaf plot before (while having seen all the other kinds of plots) and therefore didn't identify it as such. There is still some problem with the way it is displayed:

  • using R Studio and having seen all the other plots in the plot-window (on the lower right side in R Studios standard configuration, I think), one simply expects the next plot to be there and not in the console-window. Isn't it possible to display the stem-and-leaf-plot in the plot-window, too?
  • the text above the plot reads as follows: "I have created a stem-and-leaf plot above using the same values for the 'mpgCity' variable as we just used for our histogram. As you can see, a stem-and-leaf plot is a useful type of histogram if you want to see the frequencies of specific values of the data. Often, there will only be one bin per tens digit, but in this case, R gives us the same bins as we saw in our histogram." So one would rather look above the text for the plot and would not find it. But more importantly, you should make it clear, that the plot is within the console-window!

Okay, that's it. Thanks for your very good work (especially for the course R Programming)! Keep it up!

I agree. I'll give some thought to how we can incorporate this, but forgive me if it takes some time. I just created a new issue as a reminder.

I can see how this might be confusing. I just pushed a change to the course about the stem-and-leaf plot printing to the console. Unfortunately, that's the default behavior of the stem() function.
