Issue continuation from the Symphony Issue Tracker. Related thread

@quma: I do not like keyboard shortcuts but in this case is it the best solution.

While keyboard shortcuts aren't used by everyone, I think it's the simplest approach to the problem (requires less effort and less changes to the core). From an usability point of view, my opinion is that there should be only one button for saving an entry, while it's perfectly legal to offer keyboard shortcuts to power users that want to save some clicks (and time).

I think visibility is the issue with keyboard shortcuts, unless you are particularly used to using them, you'd probably never know that the functionality existed.

I think this issue tracker is a perfect example of two buttons that work, Comment & Close and Comment, and saves time. While we offer the 'View All' functionality after the entry has been saved, it's in two polar opposites of the screen

Actually I often find myself closing issues while I don't want to do that :/

Haha, fair enough I'm guess I'm used to it now. I like it because when I'm working off Opera Mini on 3G I can comment and close without having to wait for the dreaded 3G to reload the page, just so I can scroll to the bottom and close the issue again.

Additional button could be visible on mobiles only. And maybe showing up on mouse over?

Interesting... This could go into a broader series of changes for
mobile users. I think we should implement the SHIFT+click mechanism
and write down a few notes concerning a mobile stylesheet for the
backend (taking the "Save and Close" button into account, of course).

As an alternative, in his Dashboard extension Nick Dunn made a
"dropdown button" that we could reuse in this context to switch
between "Save" and "Save and Close" options. Once you click on one of
those option, the form is submitted and the page reloaded according to
the preferred behaviour (i.e. same page or entries index).

Yes, i was trying to point that out before :).
Button used in Dashboard is really nice. I mostly copied it to "Bulk Importer" as a way to add function to "create" button used by "Subsection Manager" field.

Yes, it's a nice idea. It would be fun to develop a jQuery plugin for this purpose. Probably something we have to discuss with @nilshoerrmann too :)

Yes, something like that. Button that can be clicked as usual, but also shows up additional options under mouse pointer. "Options" basically act as additional buttons. They are just hidden until mouse hovers over default button.

It looks like this has been released as an extension today:

From what I can see the approach of Nitriques' extension is different than ours. The former uses different buttons for each action, while we were considering the possibilities of a single dropdown button like the one you used in your Dashboard extension. Moreover, the idea is to extend this functionality to DS, Event, Page and Utility editors.

Something to consider for 2.4 or, since we've got a working extension, not to consider at all for now?

Tempted to say let's not consider it, but encourage people to install the extension if they need the functionality.

Tempted to say I agree. ;) The most we could do is providing keyboard shortcuts for pro users, rather than extra buttons. Still not sure...

Agree, can revisit it at a later date if need be, but I think Nitrique's extension fills the void at the moment.
