Feature description

I am not a dev, so I do not know what the Android API for this is called, but Nextcloud app has a feature, which allows it to run file sync when files are placed in a directory and be inactive (thus consume zero battery) when nothing is happening.

Could the same interfaces be used to implement a feature like that in syncthing? Meaning it runs when and only if a new file appears (or changes) in the specified directories on the phone.

Problem or use case

Photos/Screenshots are immediately uploaded, but the app remains otherwise inactive. Same as Nextcloud app does it. IIUC not even active connection to the server needs to be kept for this to work.

Alternatives or workarounds

  • using Nextcloud - Nextcloud app does exactly this and is honestly the only reason why I use Nextcloud. I found better alternatives for all other Nextcloud features
  • syncing every hour, syncing only on charger - none of these provide the desired functionality, but are great for preserving battery life
