Ctrl+ clicking on multiple objects in the canvas and using the context menu/hotkey shortcut to group them.
(Current implementation looks incomplete.)

Yes, I see - it groups only one layer...

It is the same with "group into sets", "group into filter layer". "group into switch layer" and other context menu options.

Resolved in Synfig version 1.5.1 - https://www.synfig.org/2021/10/30/synfig-studio-1-5-1-released/
