This is something I can tackle, just setting a placeholder issue.
Consider switching to using https://github.com/jquense/uncontrollable for the React portion. This would allow us to have an uncontrolled (value etc existing on internal state), as well as having a controlled input (user controlled what value is).

For this one, I'm thinking for now maybe we can go with the solution you suggested: checking value in componentWillReceiveProps and resetting component state when value is different.
