Notes from coffee chat between @Arielle-Bennett and @malvikasharan

Fireside Chat Series of joy theme ideas:

  • Optimism (both techno and research)
  • Feminism and intersectionality and tech
  • Mobilising & collective action
  • Emergent Strategy
    • This could be deep dive into each point
  • Others? (suggestions welcome)

Could ask folks from the community to lead or curate or suggest speakers for each of these

TTW 5-year celebration: what does it mean for us?

  • What can we do to create memorable moments for the community?
  • Do we want something big or small? One event or many events? Centralised or decentralised?
  • Collaboration Workshop is the 'birth time' - so we should check how we can support/celebrate with the community there (@AlexandraAAJ is checking with @KirstieJane and me about the budget)
  • Plans for what could be happening throughout the year
    • Limited birthday Swag/Merch: What could be 5 years Merch?
    • Hosting The Turing Way collaboration events:
      • Bring people together Tell us where they want the project to go
      • Use their inputs in planning the future
      • Show and tell focused on Turing Way contributions as well
      • Stories of people's Turing Way journey
    • Sponsoring dinner, sending stickers
      • Can we raise money if we don't have much budget?
    • How does the future of contributors look like
    • How can the Turing Way adapt its structure to support the next generation of contributors?
  • Global sprint:
    • Using Mozilla Global sprint format: Distributed Hackathon https://github.com/mozilla/global-sprint
    • Something before November Book Dash Week so that people can join us in November to share what they did
    • Organise sprints: Use a local/global sprint day as a way to recruit people for the November Book Dash.

What we need:

  • A date/week
  • A theme
  • A web page/location where all events will be listed
  • Possible ideas for what folks can do without too many directions from the team
  • Budget to sponsor food
  • Someone/group to coordinate/communicate/support: the birthday celebration committee
  • The Turing Global Sprint Committee: Anniversary Edition

How do we manage overhead?

  • People apply and say that they want to host local sprint
  • A global room to facilitate sync-up
  • Stickers: Limited edition stickers
  • Loop in Book Dash committee

We could do new Anniversary branding material: stickers, tote bags, cards and send them to our Book Dash local hubs, in June and Nov

Hi Malvika - thanks for making this issue!

This could be a great opportunity to send thank you's to everyone who's participated in Fireside Chats (i.e in the form of the tote bags, seeded cards, stickers) to thank them for their wonderful collaboration with the community over the past few years. We could also do the same for previous Book Dash participants. 馃槉

I've also brought this idea to other spaces, but we could also revisit topics from the project to host a special 'Fireside Chat': i.e. What does reproducibility in science look like, 5 years on? How has the open science ecosystem evolved in the time since the project's founding?

We could also ask folks to make their 'chain of credit', or share their "TTW timelines" - like what we did in 2022 in the fireside chat?

Here are some sweet ideas for swag, from one of my favourite open source communities, the "Everything Open" conference in Australia, auspiced by Linux Australia. https://www.redbubble.com/people/linuxaustralia/shop
