Interesting. Now I wonder if it could be confined to ggraph or if it's a peculiar way ggdag is using it

is ggdag doing anything outside of building up a standard ggraph plot in the end?

Well, ggdag sort of goes around ggraph when it comes to the API. It uses ggplot() rather than ggraph(). Internally, it uses the Geoms from ggraph. I wasn't able to replicate this with ggraph itself, which made me think it might be something about this way that ggdag makes use of the edge geoms.

I can't see how that would be able to cause a system crash so it is more likely a bug latent in ggraph

Oh I definitely think it's in that line cutting code, just maybe invoking it in a way that is not common in ggraph itself
