VGM is staple, but the are other formats that must (like in DM) or can be supported:

• S98. The key feature is that the are no limits to chip instances, what matches the feature of Furnace to stack soundchips. SUpported chips list is much shorter than what VGM covers, but still
• NSF(E)/NSF2 - obvious
• SID - ditto
• HES - PC Engine equivalent of NSF
• AY if I understood correctly, it's like NSF for AY. Ripped audio code, supports PSGPCM (!)
• CMS - format for (double) SAA1099, from Creative themselves
• SNDH - similiar to AY, targets Atari ST, rather than ZX
• GBS - Game Boy sound format
• SAP - Atari 8-bit sound format
• KSS - MSX AY and SCC sound format
• SPC/SNSF - SNES sound formats, either planned for 0.7
• WSR - Wonderswan audio code format
• SGC - Sega Master System/Game Gear/Coleco audio code format

The megadrive builder seems to be developed by http://mjsstuf.x10host.com/pages/vgmPlay/vgmPlay.htm, maybe he will agree to open source it ?

I think that builders could/should almost be separated projects, this would be better because @tildearrow have already a growing list of things to do ;-)

S98 supports whatever the target chips it can handle support (including YM2608 SpeakBoard ADPCM Delta-T play commands). If the S98 resolution is high enough, it can absolutely handle SSGPCM (and therefore YM2612 DAC writes). Most S98s are recorded at a paltry 100Hz or 1000Hz resolution which quantizes the living crap out of such commands, but at higher rates like 44100Hz (and even....96000Hz or 192000Hz) it'd be no problem.

I feel like if .FUR files could be played back directly using a library / media player plugin, it'd negate a lot of need for these old cumbersome formats.

I honestly don't like listening to (or even creating) NSF or SID files because I don't have control over specifying the duration, or how it fades out or ends or how it handles loop points and such. I feel like those formats were really just intended for game rips, and people are held hostage by them because nothing better exists.

I believe in the future, the novelty of playing on aging hardware will wear off, and having an .NSF will be inferior to having a .FUR. Of course, there's still value in making music for homebrew ROMs that can run in emulators, but having the original "module file" can provide a far better listening experience than old antiquated formats intended for game rips.

Module files and dedicated mod players handle this a lot more gracefully Like .MOD or how ZX Spectrum formats play in ZXTune like .STC or .PT3. And logging formats aren't bad either.

The VGM format is quite the breath of fresh air, though it takes manual work to 'log' everything in that format under normal circumstances. Though it is missing support for even simple chips like VRC6.

But Furnace has the advantage of creating and playing its own files, so having this capability as a library for media players would be infinitely more user-friendly I think.
