Tmux cannot display symbols using legacy character sets. (E.g., cp1251 or latin1 or anything that isn't utf8.)

In previous versions one could set the 'utf8' option to 'off'. Newer versions got rid of this option and now tmux is broken if your terminal emulator is set to anything other than utf8.

tmux now supports UTF-8 only.
