If I type anc on the command line, the screen flash and the caret move to the top of the screen. Is it possible to turn off this behaviour?

Not sure what exactly you mean.
Can you write down each step you do in detail from the point you start your terminal (xterm)? And then what happens unexpectedly?
Or can you make a short screencast?
I will look into this and give you a proper answer, but I first need to know what annoys you or what don't like about it.
