Bards need a rework, and I've seen this mechanic in other games.
Basically, as the bard sings, it charges up a bucket over time, when it's full, the bard can change songs in combat and that unleashes an affect that's unique to that particular song, with it's strength based on the points in the recharge bucket.
This would then exhaust that particular song for a medium duration. This would ensure folks plan accordingy.
Example switch affects:
song of healing - burst of healing
song of renewing - procs mem/pray complete one spell for group members
song of protection - a big bonus to AC or dodge for short duration
song of disharmony - a burst of noise that silences the room, or stuns mobs
song of offensive harmony - a big burst of HR or DR - maybe group haste for a short time
song of sorcery - a short duration bonus to spell focus for invoke, enchant, etc...
These are just example ideas and would be an avenue to make bards more dynamic and fun to play.
