A very nice site that describes the basics of the Interent. Only modern browsers will render it correctly.

> Web pages are written in HTML, the web programming language that tells web browsers how to structure and present content on a web page. In other words, HTML provides the basic building blocks for the web.

I decided to test out <a href="http://heroku.com">Heroku</a> development on an old domain I had lying around. After stumbling upon
<a href="http://cloudhead.io/toto">toto</a> I decided to give it a shot. Toto uses simple .txt files
for writing out blog posts which fits my style quite well. Once the articles are written, Git is utilized for
pushing content to the server. The experience has been enjoyable so far and I look forward to utilizing
Heroku for other personal projects.

Larry Page commenting on the job performance of Eric:
>Eric has clearly done an outstanding job leading Google for the last decade. The results speak for themselves. There is no other CEO in the world that could have kept such headstrong founders so deeply involved and still run the business so brilliantly.
Google reported a Q4 revenue of $8.44 billion which was a increase in 26% compared to 2009. Not too shabby.

This is a fairly dramatic change in management as Schmidt will now be relegated to "technology thought leadership." Will Larry stepping in to manage day-to-day operations spell a change in direction for the company? Only time will tell.

There is no denying Steve Jobs is a visionary. There is also no denying that Tim Cook is a brilliant operational manager. I think the combination of the two is the secret sauce behind Apple's success. From the New York Times:

>Take the iPad. It took Mr. Jobs’s imagination and the expertise of his engineers and designers to create it. But Mr. Cook’s operational abilities allowed Apple to parlay a cool product into a business that has already brought in $9.6 billion, as the company built and shipped worldwide nearly 15 million iPads in just nine months to meet customers’ seemingly insatiable appetite.
Apple has a deep bench from which to draw from for a replacement to Steve Jobs, but who has the visionary prowess to complement the managerial expertise of Cook? Only time will tell.

Then all of a sudden the coach was approached. “”Coach coach!’ and he says ‘Yeah yeah, what what!?’ ‘I don’t want to say nothing but if you look up there across the street on Waveland Ave, one of those apartments there seems to be a reflection of a camera.’” Then the coach sent security up to check out everyone staying in the building and get the windows closed.
It's hard to say if this stuff currently happens in the league. Regardless, we're in for a good game today.

Writing does not always come easy for me. I'm easily distracted by the myriad of things possible at the computer and on the Internet. My brain throttles into overdrive as I attempt to get my thoughts through the keyboard and on the screen. As ideas come in I'm always tempted to tab out to Safari and quickly look something up. Oftentimes as soon as this happens, my concentration is broken and I fall down the internet rabbit hole. [Notational Velocity][2], in it's simplicity, has helped solve this problem.

[Alex Payne] [1] has some great advice about using simple tools that are focused and do one thing extremely well. NV is the epitome of this advice. There are [versions of NV][3] that support [Markdown][4] as well as [Simplenote][5] syncing which makes the task of writing and publishing even easier.

I would hate to lose any of my writing due to a server failure or hard drive crash. NV stores all of its text files in a small database which can be encrypted and offloaded to [Dropbox][6]. And automatic Simplenote syncing means that in the very moment you type a new word, it is saved in two offsite locations.

The first time I opened NV I was a little baffled at the interface. There is almost nothing to see. There are two panes set within one vertical window. The top pane contains a list of all your notes and the bottom pane is the writing area. At the very top is a search bar that serves two functions. As you type in it, the first pane will automatically search and filter your list of notes. This happens in the same manner as Google Instant. If you push return after writing something in the bar a new note will be created and whatever you had in the search bar will be the title. This means there is never any need for CMD-N or CMD-S. New notes are created and saved automatically.

I can't recommend Notational Velocity enough.

What is the distinction between "Programming" and "Software Development"? Krishna makes his distinction in his article:

>Programming is solving a well-defined problem. Software development is defining the problem in the first place.
I think this distinction is accurate, although programming does not come easily to everyone. To be proficient I have to constantly work at programming. In college I remember my professors telling me over and over that learning the semantics of a given programming language wasn't important, rather it was understanding the problem and designing a smart solution. The implementation of the solution was irrelevant; Anyone can teach themselves a programming language through repetition and documentation. This didn't always make sense to me as I struggled with [inheritance](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inheritance_(object-oriented_programming\)) and [polymorphism](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymorphism_in_object-oriented_programming). The most important thing, I was told, was to learn how to identify the problem and design a solution.

category: article
link:
date: 24/01/2011
timestamp: 2011-01-24 12:35:33.778152 -07:00

After reading the guest post by Phil Libin on [Techcrunch](http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/19/evernote-mac-app-store/) about his experience with the Mac App store, it struck me as odd that it took this long for an official "store" to be released on a desktop platform. I know it seems that good ideas are always a long time coming, but how did everyone (Microsoft) but Apple miss the boat on this? Phil, like many of us, thought Evernote's success could only be attributed to the rise of smartphone adoption. But in reality it was attributed to exposure and a centralized location for people to actually *find* the app.

To me, at least, it seems the Internet has been around forever. In reality it is still in its infancy: It's a jungle, its the Wild Wild West. Ordinary people still don't know where to find great software in this wilderness. As a society we have grown accustomed to specialized brick-and-mortar stores where we know we can find what we're looking for. Imagine if Wal-Mart didn't exist and instead every product was sold on the streets in fixed but seemingly abstract locations? Before Apple introduced the App Store this is how software was bought and sold online. For most people if they couldn't find your software in a box and on a shelf, they weren't buying it...but not because they didn't want it but rather because they couldn't find it.

Evernote more than [doubled](http://blog.evernote.com/2011/01/07/mac-app-store-more-than-doubles-new-users/) its number of new users after the debut on the MAS. That's because, as Mr. Libin puts it:

>It isn't mobile that's overwhelmingly important, it's the app store.
UPDATE: I received a [response](https://twitter.com/derrickbowen/status/29712518133846016) about including apt-get in this discussion. I [responded](https://twitter.com/amazonmp3/status/29713202635874304) that if we follow the analogy apt-get would be the brick-and-mortar equivalent of the Goodwill. There are a few gems amongst the junk, but you're on your own and you may have to fix the stuff yourself.

Amidst the current recession are stories of bright young minds becoming entrepreneurial sensations overnight. And thanks to the wonder of modern communication, these stories spread like wildfire throughout college campuses across America. Perhaps a question many young minds forget to ask themselves before creating a new venture is: Why?

Jeffrey Bussgang addresses this question in his article on the [Harvard Business Review](http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2011/01/should_i_become_an_entrepreneu.html):

>In the earliest stages of a venture - the jungle - there are no clear paths available and the skills required are to thrive in the midst of the chaos. For those who possess that makeup, being a start-up executive is an excellent fit. But for those that like clear paths with little uncertainty and a great deal of structure - the highway - an early-stage venture will feel like a very uncomfortable environment.
This is a something everyone thinking about starting a business should assess for themselves. There is comfort in the structured 9 to 5 workday typical of a job in corporate America. And the demands of a startup CEO are akin to the analogy in Jeffrey's article. It's a jungle out there, but it's hard not to look at the successes of companies like Facebook, Twitter, Groupon or 37Signals and wonder if it would be possible to accomplish myself.

[Obsession Times Voice](http://daringfireball.net/2009/03/obsession_times_voice) from Jon Gruber is an article I read nearly every week. It inspires me as I strive to make this blog (and anything for that matter) great. I suggest you read it, and then consider whether determination and obsession are the key ingredients to overcoming the entrepreneurial wilderness.
