+There is no denying Steve Jobs is a visionary.  There is also no denying that Tim Cook is a brilliant operational manager. I think the combination of the two is the secret sauce behind Apple's success.  From the New York Times:

+Writing does not always come easy for me. I'm easily distracted by the myriad of things possible at the computer and on the Internet. My brain throttles into overdrive as I attempt to get my thoughts through the keyboard and on the screen. As ideas come in I'm always tempted to tab out to Safari and quickly look something up. Oftentimes as soon as this happens, my concentration is broken and I fall down the internet rabbit hole. [Notational Velocity][2], in it's simplicity, has helped solve this problem.

+ [Alex Payne] [1] has some great advice about using simple tools that are focused and do one thing extremely well.  NV is the epitome of this advice.  There are [versions of NV][3] that support [Markdown][4] as well as [Simplenote][5] syncing which makes the task of writing and publishing even easier.
+
+I would hate to lose any of my writing due to a server failure or hard drive crash.  NV stores all of its text files in a small database which can be encrypted and offloaded to [Dropbox][6].  And automatic Simplenote syncing means that in the very moment you type a new word, it is saved in two offsite locations.
+
+The first time I opened NV I was a little baffled at the interface.  There is almost nothing to see.  There are two panes set within one vertical window.  The top pane contains a list of all your notes and the bottom pane is the writing area.  At the very top is a search bar that serves two functions.  As you type in it, the first pane will automatically search and filter your list of notes.  This happens in the same manner as Google Instant.  If you push return after writing something in the bar a new note will be created and whatever you had in the search bar will be the title.  This means there is never any need for CMD-N or CMD-S.  New notes are created and saved automatically.

+What is the distinction between "Programming" and "Software Development"?  Krishna makes his distinction in his article:

+I think this distinction is accurate, although programming does not come easily to everyone. To be proficient I have to constantly work at programming. In college I remember my professors telling me over and over that learning the semantics of a given programming language wasn't important, rather it was understanding the problem and designing a smart solution. The implementation of the solution was irrelevant; Anyone can teach themselves a programming language through repetition and documentation. This didn't always make sense to me as I struggled with [inheritance](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inheritance_(object-oriented_programming\)) and [polymorphism](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymorphism_in_object-oriented_programming). The most important thing, I was told, was to learn how to identify the problem and design a solution.

+After reading the guest post by Phil Libin on [Techcrunch](http://techcrunch.com/2011/01/19/evernote-mac-app-store/) about his experience with the Mac App store, it struck me as odd that it took this long for an official "store" to be released on a desktop platform. I know it seems that good ideas are always a long time coming, but how did everyone (Microsoft) but Apple miss the boat on this? Phil, like many of us, thought Evernote's success could only be attributed to the rise of smartphone adoption. But in reality it was attributed to exposure and a centralized location for people to actually *find* the app.

+To me, at least, it seems the Internet has been around forever. In reality it is still in its infancy:  It's a jungle, its the Wild Wild West. Ordinary people still don't know where to find great software in this wilderness. As a society we have grown accustomed to specialized brick-and-mortar stores where we know we can find what we're looking for. Imagine if Wal-Mart didn't exist and instead every product was sold on the streets in fixed but seemingly abstract locations? Before Apple introduced the App Store this is how software was bought and sold online. For most people if they couldn't find your software in a box and on a shelf, they weren't buying it...but not because they didn't want it but rather because they couldn't find it.
