Flesh out color theme variables

Is color-brand-100 through color-brand-900 a good idea? How do you come up with a system for text color variables in that case? Maybe one set of text variables for dark backgrounds, and another set for light backgrounds? Plus a variable to set at what point it should switch color schemes for text? I dunno.
