A regular size button is properly vertically centered in a navbar:
<button type="submit" class="btn btn-primary navbar-btn" > Save </button>
A xs button is NOT properly vertically centered in a navbar:
<button type="submit" class="btn btn-primary btn-xs navbar-btn" > Save </button>
css fix:
.btn-xs.navbar-btn { margin-top: 12px; }
(And this kind of thing most likely applies to other button sizes)

.btn-lg is taller than the navbar itself, so I'm not sure how much sense it makes to use button sizes in the navbar in the first place.

Well, if you wanted to do that - you would need a larger navbar. Anyway, for those buttons that are smaller - this css fixes it.
(Also applies to sm/lg btn-groups.)
