The parts on the moon Twemojis which are being lit by the sun should be yellow, not gray #72
Comments
to be honest, I've never seen a yellow moon. I'd argue everyone else is doing it wrong. Just my opinion |
On that I'd like to quote Mark Davis (the one from this and this):
Regards |
if I see a yellow circle I think sun, not moon, regardless whatever any standard says |
Have you ever looked out the window at the moon? It definitely has a strong yellow tint to it. |
I'm partially color blind and I've never associated the color yellow to the moon. yellow => sun, moon => white or gray, sorry ¯_ (ツ) _/¯ |
Great, so everybody else is wrong because you have a physical defect that prevents you from seeing the world as it looks to the rest of the world. Brilliant. |
there's no need to be upset or anything, specially with me since I have nothing to with assets and I'm not the designer here. However, I'm curious to know if your eyes or your color picker would say there's a predominance of yellow in these pictures from NASA ... I might try myself a scan. |
These are taken from space. Take a photo in the evening through our earth's atmosphere. Ask friends, neighbors and family. It's not yellow, but is a pale yellow. As others have noted: twemoji is the odd one out... |
So, without going "white and gold" VS "black and blue" style it looks like the Moon is also white during the day, yellowish during the night, but the soil color is gray. I've no idea which pale-yellow/bright-grayish color would be most appropriate, but if you know, I might be able to fix at least SVG images, until we hear from a designer for the rest of the assets. You can simply use the other emoji sets as color references. |
I never take "borrowing" that easy when corporates are involved ;-) will need a designer review either ways |
Are you OK with me adjusting the AI files? It's a handful of color values. I can do it within 10 minutes. |
Well, if you have a licensed AI that could change them, works for me. I will still probably need a designer review from Twitter, but feel free to PR so I can verify it works once converted into SVG and PNGs and push for a review ;-) Thanks |
Yes, I have a licensed AI. Why is this even a question? You're surprisingly uptight and righteous for somebody who collaborates on open-source software. I can understand certain concerns, but my first thought if somebody offers to help would not be "better make sure the files are created with a non-pirated version of the editor". Is there maybe someone else at Twitter than is not partially colorblind, argumentative and paranoid who can replace you for these tasks? I understand this is all free, but you're pushing people away with your attitude and I'm seriously considering switching to Emoji One. |
see the list of PRs and other discussions ... this came out before and double checking, since I cannot verify 'cause I've not AI, is better than troubles ... for everyone. Why so surprised about this question?
which task? I have nothing to do with assets and their designs, and I was trying to understand if this was a real issue. It came out on Twitter not everyone thinks the moon is gray, and I've just stated (with a shrug that wasn't mean to offend anyone, it was just about my condition) I think we can live with current state, specially because I can't change assets, and I'm volunteering here, without any recent support from anyone else. Apologies if this caused you troubles. Regards |
Just to extra clarify, I've stated that because somebody might try with a trial and use it for quick little changes. Here you have involved Twitter Inc. as project holder, and Max CDN, as assets distributor (not only .png, .ai too). Plus we have public content on Github. If in this kind of projects someone which is not even an employee and is a volunteer takes extra precautions, feel free to call him paranoid, but I've worked for 3 corporates already and I think those are just basic legitimated points to clarify upfront. I don't know you and don't have a way to contact you so, hence the simple double checking sentence. But again, if you are willing to contribute, me and whoever is using twemoji icons, of course we will surely appreciate and thank You! Best Regards |
It's yellow now (and I'm closing out old issues). |
Hello,
there are several moon Twemojs which are (in parts) being lit by the sun, namely:
"Waxing crescent moon symbol" Twemoji:
"First quarter moon symbol" Twemoji:
"Waxing gibbous moon symbol" Twemoji:
"Full moon symbol" Twemoji:
"Waning gibbous moon symbol" Twemoji:
"Last quarter moon symbol" Twemoji:
"Waning crescent moon symbol" Twemoji:
"Crescent moon" Twemoji:
"First quarter moon with face" Twemoji:
"Last quarter moon with face" Twemoji:
"Full moon with face" Twemoji:
IMHO the parts which are being lit by the sun should be yellow, not gray.
The Twitter "Twemoji" Emoji set pretty much seems to be the only Emoji set which has those parts in gray. Pretty much all the other Emoji sets are using yellow for these parts, see the following comparison chart for example:
http://emoji.codes/family?c=nature
So it would be nice if the Twitter "Twemoji" Emoji set could adapt this as well for better interoperability and because it would look more natural IMHO.
And the craters on the moon could possibly be a little bit darker for better visibility/better contrast.
Regards
