🛡️ SafeDecoding

This is the official repository for "SafeDecoding: Defending against Jailbreak Attacks via Safety-Aware Decoding".

Abstract

As large language models (LLMs) become increasingly integrated into real-world applications such as code generation and chatbot assistance, extensive efforts have been made to align LLM behavior with human values, including safety. Jailbreak attacks, aiming to provoke unintended and unsafe behaviors from LLMs, remain a significant LLM safety threat. In this paper, we aim to defend LLMs against jailbreak attacks by introducing SafeDecoding, a safety-aware decoding strategy for LLMs to generate helpful and harmless responses to user queries. Our insight in developing SafeDecoding is based on the observation that, even though probabilities of tokens representing harmful contents outweigh those representing harmless responses, safety disclaimers still appear among the top tokens after sorting tokens by probability in descending order. This allows us to mitigate jailbreak attacks by identifying safety disclaimers and amplifying their token probabilities, while simultaneously attenuating the probabilities of token sequences that are aligned with the objectives of jailbreak attacks. We perform extensive experiments on five LLMs using six state-of-the-art jailbreak attacks and four benchmark datasets. Our results show that SafeDecoding significantly reduces the attack success rate and harmfulness of jailbreak attacks without compromising the helpfulness of responses to benign user queries.

Attack Datasets 🤗

GCG, AutoDAN, PAIR, and DeepInception

This 🤗Huggingface dataset contains attack prompts we generated from GCG, AutoDAN, PAIR, and DeepInception. Note this dataset is for research use ONLY.

SAP30, GPTFuzzer, and HEx-PHI

Please refer to the author's repo for SAP30, GPTFuzzer, and HEx-PHI dataset.

Customize your own dataset! 🫨

You can customize your own dataset by modifying datasets/custom_prompts.json. Here is an example:

You can then use this customized dataset in defense.py by adding --defender custom in argparse (see Inference-time Defense Evaluation below).

Getting Start

[Optional] Get access to attack datasets and Llama2-chat model from Huggingface 🫨

If you want to use the attack dataset we provided and the Llama2-chat model, please ensure you have permission to the attack datasets and the llama2 model. To login in terminal, enter:

huggingface-cli login

then enter your Huggingface private key beginning with "hf_".

Inference-time Defense Evaluation

We provide easy-to-use implementation SafeDecoding and other six baseline defenses, i.e., PPL, Self-Examination, Paraphrase, Retokenization, Self-Reminder and ICD in defense.py. You can use our code to evaluate your attack performance under different defense mechanisms 👀. Please refer to our paper for detailed parameter setups.

To start,

Current Supports:

  • Model Name: vicuna, llama2, guanaco, falcon and dolphin.

  • Attacker: GCG, AutoDAN, PAIR, DeepInception, AdvBench and your customized dataset.

  • Defender: SafeDecoding, PPL, Self-Exam, Paraphrase, Retokenization, Self-Reminder, ICD.

Don't forget to add your openai api to get harmful scores. If you only want to get ASR, you can

python defense.py --model_name [YOUR_MODEL_NAME] --attacker [YOUR_ATTACKER_NAME] --defender [YOUR_DEFENDER_NAME] --disable_GPT_judge

Utility Evaluation

We integrated Just-Eval in defense.py. To evaulate,

Please refer to mt_bench/README.md for detailed MT_Bench setups (not integrated to defense.py yet as it contains multi-round conversations).

[Optional] Customize Your Own Experts! 🫨

We provide some out-of-the-box expert models for vicuna, llama2, guanaco, falcon and dolphin in lora_modules. These experts may not be strong enough, and you can of course train your more powerful expert models. To do so, you can

cd exp
python finetune.py --model_name [YOUR_MODEL_NAME] --GPT_API [YOUR_OPENAI_API]

In this case, you will need to collect your own datasets and fine-tune the original model.
