Localized Column¶ ↑

Rails plugin for localization activerecord model fields. It stores several translations in the same field serializing them.

This is an early draft of plugin, so use it on your own risk.

script/plugin install git://github.com/varezhka/localized_column.git

In the model:

localized_column :title, :about

The plugin creates localized fields for each available locales:

@post.title_en = 'English title'
@post.title_ru = 'Русский тайтл'

@post.title_en      # => 'English title'
@post.title_ru      # => 'Русский тайтл'

I18n.default_locale # => :en
@post.title         # => 'English title'

I18n.locale = :ru   # => :ru
@post.title         # => 'Русский тайтл'

Downside¶ ↑

As far the plugin stores several localization in the same field serializing it, you can’t use ActiveRecord find method and order find results by these fields. It is recommended to use :text column type for this fields because :string usually has not enough length for storing serialized fields.
