We have been seeing Vite hanging a lot since we first started using it half a year ago. Really wondering what happens. It might be Chrome that is somehow to blame; I remember our webpack builds could freeze the browser too if debugging in DevTools and at the same time causing a reload. Difference is that it happens on all platforms, also Windows and macOS. |

Preamble
Opening this as a discussion because it's impossible to provide a concrete reproduction. The issue happens with a large propriety repo that I cannot share. Also, it might be an OS/Browser issue instead of a Vite issue.
Issue
Chrome 94.0.4606.81 (Official Build) (64-bit) / Linux / Ubuntu 20.04 (running inside VMWare Workstation Pro 16) hangs after several reloads of
npx vite
dev serverThis is a clean install of Ubuntu 20.04, and Chrome with no extensions. Incognito tab crashes the same way.
On a project with a lot of resources, the chrome tab will become unresponsive after several reloads:
The tab might crash outright, or just become unresponsive as network requests get stuck on "pending":
npx vite --debug
doesn't show anything interesting at the time of crash:Cannot replicate on Chrome / Windows
Reloading the same page served from the same vite process on Chrome 94.0.4606.81 (Official Build) (64-bit) / Windows 10 21H1 Build 19043.1266 DOES NOT CRASH
