There is currently both a readme and readme.md file which is slightly confusing, would it be possible to combine the two files into a single file? Preferably readme.md so it displays nicely on GitHub ;)

That is actually on purpose. "readme" contains easily readable overview and readme.md links to github wiki with more information :)
