I have the same error using cpu.
OS: Ubuntu 18.04.4 on VirtualBox 6.1.4 (with KVM)
Memory: 8GB RAM + 8GB SWAP (12GB used on run)

I had the same issue, creating the VisPy's scene canvas did segfault.
This VisPy issue says OpenGL needs two more packages with Ubuntu, installing them (sudo apt install mesa-common-dev libglu1-mesa-dev) did solve the issue for me.
