Braille devices used in conjunction with a host computer are almost always controlled by whatever screen reader is running on that system. The screen reader typically provides a command to turn speech output on and off, so the user can turn speech off and use the screen reader entirely via the braille display (as I typically do in some circumstances such as teleconferences). Thus, I’m wondering what is being asked for here that can’t already be achieved by turning speech off and reading/navigating the application with the braille display. Notifications should be shown as alert messages on the braille device (typically replacing whatever the user is reading and persisting for a user-configurable amount of time). Is this requirement really distinct from the earlier requirement for notifications to be delivered to AT?
