from @xfq:

Unlike the Japanese version, the term "ruby-block" (親文字群) doesn't seem to be used in this document. If that's intended, we can probably remove this term from the English version and just use "the ruby annotation and its base text".

We may need to check where this term is used in the japanese version and compare to what we have in english.

The following is a comparison of the Japanese text containing 親文字群 and the corresponding English text. Sometimes 親文字群 is translated as "ruby base text" or "base text", and sometimes it's just omitted in the English text (see footnote [1] below).

Processing is done in two steps. In the first step, processing of layout only considers the relative positions of the ruby annotation and its base text (we refer to these, collectively, in this document as the ruby-block).

In the second step, layout processing decides the position of the ruby base text in the line, taking into consideration the preceding and following characters (of the ruby-block[1]).

In other words, the relative positions of the ruby annotation and its base text as decided in the first step are not modified in the light of any preceding and following characters (of the ruby-block[1]).

Also, when the base text is placed at the line head or the line end the method used in this document does not align the first or last character of the base text to the line head or the line end by modifying the relative positions of the ruby annotation and its base text.

To align the following items to the two-step processing method described in § 2.2 Matters considered by the placement rules, points 1, 2, and 3 belong to the first step, and points 4 and 5 belong to the second (i.e., the position of the ruby-block in the line[1]).

[1] The content in parentheses does not exist in the English version. I added it to correspond to the Japanese version.

#38 proposes a fix for this. I worked from the original japanese to change the translation.

In making the fix i moved the definition of ruby-block to the beginning of the section, which allowed me to also add it to the first bullet (although it's not in the original japanese, i think it clarifies things).

I also added ruby-block to some places in the 3rd bullet, where it helps, actually.

I didn't add it to the examples like the last one shown above, since i didn't think it was necessary, and it doesn't appear in the other places where that text is used.
