Step 3.4.3 and 3.4.5 should become step 3.6 and 3.7. Step 3.5.1 needs to be merged into step 3.5 and step 3.5.2 can be removed (leaving 3.5 with no substeps).

A new step 6 that simply returns result might be even better. Then all individual returns can be removed, although it raises a small concern about allocating result in substeps and returning it from outer steps.
