I haven't found an easy way to delete backups say older than 30 days, and such. Is there any way to specify a retention time or is such a feature planned to be implemented ?

Yes, planning to create a
backy2 expire <version_uid> <timespan>
and a
backy2 gc
which collects expired versions.

Have a look at http://backy2.com/docs/cleanup.html#using-the-expire-feature which was implemented today. This in addition to tags should resolve the above issue.
In order to better automate this task, ls got two new parameters: -f which allows you to select fields only and -e which only lists expired versions.
